Sexual taboos, old
fashioned values, parenting, racism, manliness, sexism, guns, patriotism,
sacrifice, and war all get questioned in this modern classic about family and
society.
“I can't concentrate. I want to go home.
I wish I didn't enjoy the sensation because I don't like you, Clive. I do like
living in your house where there's plenty of guns. But I don't like you at all.
But I do like the sensation. Well, I'll have it then. I'll have it, I'll have
it... Don't stop... Don't stop...”
Men play women. Women
play men. Adults play children. Everybody has sex.
The first half of this
ridiculous play is set in Colonial Africa, the second is in London, in the
present day. For the show's family, only 25 years have passed. We find out what
has changed in those 25 years for them, and 150 years for the rest of the
world.
Caryl Churchill is one
of most well-known and respected female playwrights in history. Her plays have
been succesful globally, and have been performed in many languages. She has won
many awards, including three Obie awards (one for Cloud 9), and a
Lawrence Olivier/BBC award. Other works by Churchill include Top Girls,
Serious Money, and A Number.
